Happy Anniversary and Goodbye Yellow Wedding Gown

One of the first Lucille Ball Specials produced for TV under her production company – Lucille Ball Productions was Happy Anniversary and Goodbye which aired on November 19, 1974. Lucy starred alongside Art Carney as unhappily married couple, Norma and Malcom Michaels who are nearing their 25th anniversary.

Lucille wears this two-piece yellow gown after returning home from her daughter’s wedding. Made of a satin polyester, the custom-made ensemble features an oversized floor length dress with long sleeves, an empire waist and a slit neckline. It was oversized becuase Ball wore a bodysuit to give her the appearance of a “thicker” stature. Watch the show to find out why! The second piece is a lace-like, yellow and white floral design sleeveless duster that also matches the cuffs of the sleeves.

While arguing with Malcom in the opening scene, Art Carney talks about Norma spending $200 on a gown she’ll never wear again. In today’s money that would equate to roughly $1,200. This show is very different from the typical domestic portrayals and is far from the ‘Lucy’ character fans were use to at that time.

Lucille Ball & Gary Morton Wedding Favors

On November 19, 1961 Lucille Ball and Gary Morton were married by Norman Vincent Peale at the Marble Collegiate Church in New York City. Their reception was held in Lucy’s penthouse apartment located on East 69th Street. This collection of wedding favors were from that evening.

The set includes a card and envelope with The Mortons printed in blue on the front, gold and white monogrammed box of matches with matching napkin and “Lucy and Gary” matchbooks.

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz Wedding Reception Place Card

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were married (eloped) on November 30, 1940. However in the years that followed, unsuccessful attempts to conceive lead to speculation by Desi’s mother Lolita that the reason was they were not married “in the eyes of God.” So on June 19, 1949 the couple were married for a second time at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Canoga Park, CA.

This is the original wedding place card used at their reception. Presumably placed where Lucy sat at the sweethearts table, it has her name written in black ink. In 2004’s “Lucy & Desi: The Real Life Scrapbook of America’s Favorite TV Couple” a copy of this place card was included.

Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz Marriage Flower Card

In November of 1940 Desi was playing the Roxy in New York City and Lucy had finished “A Girl, A Guy and a Gob” for RKO. The studio sent her to NYC for the film’s premiere, which was great as she and Desi would be able to see and spend some time with each other. After giving an interview to a magazine about being single, Lucy was told by Desi that what she had said would change because they were going to get married the next day.

On November 30, 1940 Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were married at the Byram River Beagle Club in Connecticut. Wearing a black dress and silver fox coat and hat, Lucy accepted a ring Desi bought at Woolworths. Upon returning to Manhattan for Desi’s show that night, Lucy was presented with a bouquet of flowers from the manager of the Byram River Beagle Club along with this card. The reverse had a message from a Mr. Edward White, which sadly is now partially missing. What is visible Ed writes about seeing her in “Marines Fly High”, another movie Lucy made with RKO.
